COUNTDOWN: Top Ten Switch Games I Played in 2023 #9 Tanuki Justice

Unless Batman: Arkham trilogy which is due to arrive tomorrow turns out to not run horrendously on Switch, Tanuki Justice will mark my final purchase for the year. It was released in October but I only just downloaded it last week and upon pressing start, a huge idiot grin was instantly plastered across my face. What a fantastic game to end the year on!

I can’t remember exactly how I came across Tanuki Justice, convincing me that it was meant to be. It’s a classic, arcade style action platformer where you blaze through stages lighting up fools with ninja stars against gorgeous, pixelated backgrounds and a soundtrack that just screams fire/100. The controls have to be experienced to be believed, your movements are so airtight it feels like you’re manipulating the action onscreen directly with your brain.

I get a strong TurboGrafx-16 vibe from this one, specifically a real gem called Ninja Spirit that I played. to. death. on the old Wii Virtual Console. This is a compliment of the highest order. I can’t even think of anything negative to say here but have heard some complain about the inability to perform a down-jump and the length of the game landing on the short side. The former likely wouldn’t have even occurred to me had I not gone into playing having already ready about it but suppose it’s fair. The latter however is a little silly as there are many difficulty settings to keep one busy and when a game is just this flatout fun, the replayability factor is through the roof.

This is my jam.

Tanuki Justice is available as a Direct Download from the Nintendo eShop for $14.99
