Nintendo Switch ARCADE ARCHAEOLOGY: Sunset Riders (1991)
With the 7th anniversary of the Nintendo Switch approaching, a lot of nerd palms have begun sweating more than usual in anticipation of the console’s inevitable successor. This means you’ll likely see plenty of retrospectives popping up here and there looking back at all of the great games that have released for the hybrid over the last now near decade. And while there are of course plenty of top shelf first and third party titles to praise, in this series let’s look back even further. Having gone through and selected some personal favorite arcade ports, I’ll be spotlighting some true must haves for anyone who misses the old days of having their sneakers stuck to God knows what on those outer space themed carpets.
Welcome to the first installment of Arcade Archaeology!

RETRO REVIEW: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (Wii U, 2003-2013) No Wind Breaking Jokes, Please
Let’s take a moment to soak this in, shall we? Here we are now in 2024 with a retro review of an 11 year old high definition remake of a 21 year old game. And one that is still tethered to Nintendo’s Wii U console, a system that somehow feels more ancient than the GameCube. And for unknown reasons that still manage to baffle, this cel-shaded installment in the series still has yet to make the leap over to the Switch. I mean, the godawful New Super Mario U has a port, so what the deuce you guys? What’s the fucking gosh-darn hold up?

POOR THINGS (2023): A New Favorite
Well, the 2024 Oscar nominations were announced this morning with Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon predictably leading the pack with 13 and 10 nominations respectively. And nestled right in between the two with 11 nods is the new film from Director Yorgos Lanthimos: Poor Things. A movie that is so bold, fresh, inventive, hilarious and straight up weird that it’s truly remarkable to see it receive such mainstream acclaim.

AGDQ 2024: Real Nerds Finish Fast
It’s that time of year again, people…When top shelf nerds, dorks, dweebs, doofuses and dingleberries from around the world gather together to do what they do best. Have horrifically awkward social interactions and play some video games! That’s right, this year’s Awesome Games Done Quick, the bi-annual week long, 24 hour a day video game playing marathon is officially underway.

PHOTO BLOG: Nintendo Amiibo Update: Terror Twilight
Back now after a holiday break and family trip at Yosemite to ring in the New Year, I’ve got another small batch of snaps to share! It was a really tough choice to decide which amiibo figures I wanted to capture in a snowy environment. But listening to a lot of Nintendo music throughout December pulled from snow stages, the Snowpeak theme from Twilight Princess kept jumping out at me. Good thing, I didn’t sleep on that HD box set for Wii U that included Wolf Link and Midna!
IN MEMORIAM: LARGE MARGE (1937-1974) Why, Tonight is the 50th Anniversary
We are all still to this day united by the love and profound sense of loss we continue to feel for a woman who touched our lives in ways words can hardly express. Marge was not just a friend; she was a constant source of light and warmth in our lives, a force of nature whose energy and spirit were as boundless as her capacity to kick a little ass sometimes.

COUNTDOWN: Top Ten Switch Games I Played in 2023 #1 Pikmin 4
Well here we are finally arriving at my number one slot on this list right as 2023 draws to a close and yes it’s true: In a year that saw Nintendo release a long awaited sequel, one knockout of a remaster and an all new return to form across their holy trinity of IP (Zelda, Metroid and Mario of course), what can I say?
It didn’t get any better than Pikmin 4.

BLOG: Batman: A Death in the Family (Issues 426-429)
If you were there, you remember. The buzz and hype had been swirling around for quite some time well before that fateful June 23rd of 1989 when Tim Burton’s Batman finally hit the big screen. Merchandise of every possible variety was popping up left and right, preview snippets of the film on evening entertainment shows became mini events to look forward to, and reruns of the camp classic television series from the 60’s were in heavy rotation.
Then of course you had the comics.
Oh man, there was some serious s%*t going down in the comics.
HAPPY HORROR DAYS: Tales From the Darkside S3 Ep11: Seasons of Belief
Tales From the Darkside is a horror anthology series from the mid 80’s that was created by the great writer/director George Romero (Night of the Living Dead, Other Living Deads). Essentially picking up where his and Stephen (You know this guy) King’s Creepshow feature film left off, the show was also inspired by EC horror comics from the 50’s. Each story involving some sort of morality tale or monster or spooky something or other (with the occasional misguided attempt at a humorous episode). It is also highly regarded for being my favorite television show of all time as well as an obvious inspiration for this little website here.
